Describe your role in a sentence…
I mean, where do I begin. It’s a complex, challenging role. We take problems and find solutions. Essentially, we’re problem solvers.
What you do each day?
I wake up quite early, I like to get ready, have some food. I get to work and check Resource Guru to see what’s in front of me. I speak to clients, update team members, write code, send emails, test websites, look at competitors for inspiration. I drink lots of coffee!
How did you get to where you are in your career?
I went to university. I did an internship and discovered a passion for code. I came to BLY and sat in reception among all the sweets and Disney cut-outs (we were doing a job for them at the time) and thought “This place is wicked, I’ll never get a job here.” I’ve been here two years. I like the people.
What do you like most about your job?
I really like the atmosphere, the people, the culture. I like the challenges – you always get something you don’t know how to do. You do the same stuff over and over again, but with a new challenge you have to work out how to do it.
Best piece of advice you’ve been given?
By my colleague Malt (that’s Christopher Malt, Senior Creative): if they’re not 'taking the mickey’ out of you, then they don’t like you. When I first started he asked “Are they giving you a hard time?” I said they were, and he said that’s a good sign. I’ve carried that with me.
What's the best thing about working at BLY?
Ping pong, sweets, fruit. I also like the company meetings as Alan (Alan Thorpe, Managing Director) always drops a few jokes in.
What qualities do you need to work at BLY?
Great personality, passion. You need to be good. You need the aptitude to learn. That’s another good bit of advice I was given.
Last book you read:
‘Clarity’ for Book Club. I didn’t like it so I’ve not read anything since. I suggested it!
Netflix series you watched:
‘Glow’. It’s good, it’s about female wrestlers.
Last thing you Googled:
Something for work, probably. I’m the sort of person who googles how dolphins wee.
Alexa or Google search?
Google. Alexa winds me up. We have one in the agency and I played ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors’ with her and she beat me every time.
Uber or taxi?
Best customer experience moment?
Received or given? Once upon a time, when I worked in customer support for John Lewis, I helped an old lady with cataracts re-tune her TV. I won customer support person of the month and had my picture on the wall.
Our campaign for the Family Building Society that focuses on real observations of people still living at home. The campaign leads with the line ‘Full beard, shaved balls. Still lives at home.’ It’s serious but fun.
